This city in the heart of Scotland is nestled on the banks of the River Tay and is often referred to as the “Gateway to the Highlands”. Fringed by two splendid public parks (North and South Inch) and the eye-catching Tay Street promenade, Perth city centre is favoured with a privileged location. As the home of shops, galleries, cafes, restaurants, art galleries and theatres, it will delight lovers of shopping, culture and nightlife. However the beautiful Perthshire countryside is easily accessible from here, with 250 miles of way-marked paths, and breathtaking mountains, hills, lochs and wildlife to discover. Gorge-walking, kayaking, quad-biking, fishing, pony-trekking and many other outdoor pursuits are all available to enjoy.
Attractions in the local area include: Scone Palace, home of the Stone of Destiny and once the place where the King of the Scots was crowned; Branklyn Garden, a National Trust garden with a remarkable collection of rare and unusual plants; The Black Watch Castle and Museum; Elcho Castle, a complete 16th-century fortified mansion; Perth Museum and Art Gallery; Noah’s Ark - a large soft play and entertainment centre for children; Huntingtower Castle; St John’s Kirk, which is Category A listed and dates back to an original settlement in the 12th century; Fair Maid’s House, the oldest surviving secular building in Perth; and King James VI Golf Course.
Perth is a key transport centre for journeys by road and rail in Scotland. The M90 motorway runs from the city south to Edinburgh; the A9 connects it to Stirling and Glasgow in the south west and Inverness in the north. There are regular rail services out of Perth Railway station, bus services and also a small airport. Travelling to or from Ireland? Don't forget the ferry! Not only does it give you
the freedom of taking your own car but it provides a superb experience of travelling
by sea and exploring the coastline. With convenient routes between Holyhead and Dublin, or Pembroke and Rosslare, we recommend
Irish Ferries for great, low-cost, transport. They are the leading Irish ferry company and provide both an excellent service, and excellent prices.
