Sometimes given the nickname of “God’s Own County” thanks to its lush green countryside and wild expanses of moor land, Yorkshire is the largest county in England. It is home to over 800 attractions, from breweries to museums, castles to zoos, and World Heritage Sites to breathtaking rides. There are many popular seaside resorts along its coastline, including Whitby, Bridlington and Scarborough, as well as quieter villages and working harbours nestled among the rugged cliffs. The North York Moors, the Yorkshire Dales and part of the Peak District National Park offer wonderful opportunities for walkers, cyclists and climbers, as well as nature reserves for bird spotters and naturalists. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway carries more passengers than any other heritage railway in the UK and the National Railway Museum is to be found in the county capital city, York.

Travelling to or from Ireland? Don't forget the ferry! Not only does it give you
the freedom of taking your own car but it provides a superb experience of travelling
by sea and exploring the coastline. With convenient routes between Holyhead and Dublin, or Pembroke and Rosslare, we recommend
Irish Ferries for great, low-cost, transport. They are the leading Irish ferry company and provide both an excellent service, and excellent prices.

User Guides
Horton-in-Ribblesdale is an ideal base to explore the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It is only a village, but thousands visit every year as both the Pennine Way and The Three Peaks of Yorkshire routes pass through it. Not to be missed is the Pen-y-Ghent Cafe, where walkers can "clock in" before they set out on the 26-mile Three Peaks route. I recommend a mug of tea at the cafe - as they are huge, and just the thing after hours of hiking the Three Peaks walk ! The village only gets 3 stars due to being a lack of services - there is the cafe, 2 pubs and a shop - but little else. Fine if you are a hiker, but not so good if you are perhaps here with the family for a week. Also, you will need a car if you use the village as a base - as the nearest town of Settle is about a 20 minute drive - so the village can feel somewhat isolated - I wonder what access is like when snowed in ? A bonus however is the railway (Settle to Carlisle) - and so good access to Leeds and Carlisle and numerous towns en route. For campers, there is a campsite adjacent to the Golden Lion pub.
