Renowned as the birthplace of the playwright and poet William Shakespeare, Stratford-Upon-Avon is located in the heart of the Warwickshire countryside, on the banks of the River Avon. Altogether there are five houses in and around the town which are connected with Shakespeare and his family, including the house where he was born and the farmhouse where his mother lived. These beautiful buildings and their furnishings are a revelation of 16th-century life and culture.
The town itself can be explored using the open-top bus service, and there is a Town Trail and a ghost walk. There are many restaurants, tea-rooms and shops, and boat trips can be taken along the peaceful river Avon. Places of interest include the church where Shakespeare is buried; the Royal Shakespeare Theatre which hosts the Royal Shakespeare Company; the MAD Museum (Mechanical Art & Design) which displays Kinetic Art, Automata and Steampunk; the Falstaff’s Experience; and the Butterfly Farm. There are numerous festivals and events, including Shakespeare's Birthday Parade, The River Festival and Stratford Literary Festival, as well as Christmas lights and Christmas shopping.
Stratford is easily accessible by road, rail and airport, and is close to the Cotswolds, with Chipping Campden only 10 miles away. Follow the links to find holiday cottages and lets available in this area on Go2, or view the surrounding area on the map below.
Lying at the very heart of England, Warwickshire is best known as “Shakespeare’s County”. And taking a break in our holiday cottages in Warwickshire is the perfect way to explore the history of our greatest playwright. At Stratford-upon-Avon, you’ll find Shakespeare’s birthplace, the famous Anne Hathaway’s Cottage and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, where you can enjoy an outstanding performance of one of the great bard’s creations.
Our Warwickshire cottage holidays are also a great opportunity to visit the beautifully preserved Warwick Castle. This is one of the UK’s top visitor attractions, and a great family favourite, where key moments in the history of this great building are re-created. The gardens here are also very impressive. If you’re into antiques, then you’ll definitely want to take a stroll around Warwick with its many specialist antique shops.
Then there’s Kenilworth Castle, England’s largest castle ruins, and a major historic site. There’s a marvellous collection of paintings, china and furniture, not to mention some great facilities for children, at Ragley Hall, a fine palladian house near Alcester – another must see during your cottage holiday in Warwickshire. And with its fine Georgian and Victorian buildings, Royal Leamington Spa offers a touch of elegance as well as some top quality shopping.
