An historic riverside town in Suffolk. Based on the River Deben, not far from the coast, there are many facilities for boating and riverside walks. The river is also home to The Tide Mill, one of the oldest of its kind in the UK, and a source of inspiration for thousands of artists and photographers over the decades. The town itself boasts a fascinating 1400 years of recorded history and has retained a variety of historical architecture, with buildings from the Tudor, Georgian, Regency and Victorian eras. There is a wide selection of shops, pubs, restaurants and cafes, as well as a theatre and cinema.
Woodbridge is close to the notable archaeological site of the Sutton Hoo burial ship, where in 1939 a collection of Anglo-Saxon treasures was discovered. The site is now owned by the National Trust.
Other attractions in the area include: Buttrums Mill, a working windmill; Beacon Rally Karts, an outdoor, off-road karting centre; Elmhurst Park, with views over the river and a children’s play area; Rendlesham Forest, which offers play equipment, walking trails and a cycle park, and is the reputed scene of UFO sightings in 1980; the Model Boat Pond on the River Path; the Quaker Burial Ground in Turn Lane; and Woodbridge Museum, which showcases local history.
Other places nearby include Waldringfield, Wickham Market, Brandeston, Witnesham, and Framlingham. Follow the links to find holiday cottages and lets available in this area on Go2, or view the surrounding area on the map below.
This beautiful county is situated to the south of Norfolk, with Cambridgeshire to the west, Essex to the south, and the North Sea to the east. It has much to offer the visitor, including the wetlands of the Broads, the Wool Towns, and a coastal strip to the east known as “The Sandlings”. There are over 5000km of marked paths as well as national cycle routes, along with country parks, nature reserves such as the Trimley Marshes, and picnic sites.
Suffolk’s notable towns include Ipswich (the county town), Felixstowe, Lowestoft, Bury St Edmunds and Newmarket.
West Suffolk is famed for its archaeological discoveries, especially that at Sutton Hoo in 1939. A grassy mound was found to be a ship burial ground containing a collection of Anglo-Saxon treasures, including a Sword of State, a shield, a helmet, gold and silver bowls, jewellery and a lyre. The site is now owned by the National Trust.
