Bury St Edmunds is a town in Suffolk, England. It is situated near to Shimpling, Long Melford, Felsham, Foxearth, Thetford, and Sudbury and is one of 99 towns or villages in Suffolk in which Go2 has cottages or holidays lets available. The nearest main cities are Ely (population 13,954), Cambridge (population 113,442), and Norwich (which has a population of 174,047 according to the 2001 Census). This beautiful county is situated to the south of Norfolk, with Cambridgeshire to the west, Essex to the south, and the North Sea to the east. It has much to offer the visitor, including the wetlands of the Broads, the Wool Towns, and a coastal strip to the east known as “The Sandlings”. There are over 5000km of marked paths as well as national cycle routes, along with country parks, nature reserves such as the Trimley Marshes, and picnic sites.
Suffolk’s notable towns include Ipswich (the county town), Felixstowe, Lowestoft, Bury St Edmunds and Newmarket.
West Suffolk is famed for its archaeological discoveries, especially that at Sutton Hoo in 1939. A grassy mound was found to be a ship burial ground containing a collection of Anglo-Saxon treasures, including a Sword of State, a shield, a helmet, gold and silver bowls, jewellery and a lyre. The site is now owned by the National Trust.
