This delightful Somerset market town is set on the edge of the beautiful Mendip Hills, by the river which shares its name. Founded in the seventh century, it has a long and fascinating history. Some streets are still cobbled, and many buildings date from the 1700s. In fact Frome possesses more listed buildings than anywhere else in the region, and highlights include The Blue House, built in 1726 as an almshouse and boy’s school, and Sheppard’s Barton, a splendid preserved street of 18th-century workers’ cottages.
Frome offers a wide range of shops, restaurants and cafes, as well as the weekly market. There are two theatres and a cinema. The town has developed a reputation for its arts and entertainment, and every year it holds a ten-day festival.
Attractions in the area include: Frome Museum, displaying local and industrial history collections; the ruined 14th-century Nunney Castle, now owned by English Heritage; Rook Lane Chapel, a Grade 1 listed building providing an impressive setting for performing and visual arts; Victoria Park - formal parkland with a bandstand and activities such as tennis, bowls, putting and boules; Longleat Safari Park; Cley Park, an Iron Age hill fort with spectacular views; The East Somerset Railway; Stoney Littleton Long Barrow, a fine example of a Neolithic chambered tomb, with multiple burial chambers open to view; Somerset Lavender; and Barton Farm Country Park.
The fourth largest town in Somerset, Frome occupies an excellent location for exploring the county. It is within easy reach of Bath, Wells, Longleat, Stourhead and many more notable places. Attractions further afield include the Fleet Air Arm Museum, Wookey Hole Caves, Lacock and the Haynes Motor Museum. Follow the links to find holiday cottages and lets available in this area on Go2, or view the surrounding area on the map below.
With its lovely beaches beautiful countryside and fascinating history, dating back to the times of the Ancient Britons, Somerset makes a wonderful cottage holiday destination. And the best way to experience the county’s many attractions is from your base in one of our holiday cottages in Somerset. Bath has some of Britain’s most majestic Georgian architecture, as well as the famous Roman Baths (not mention great shopping). Then there’s Wells, England’s smallest city. Wandering around the cathedral close, with its unspoilt medieval lanes is like taking a step back in time. And for a real sense of mystery, there’s Glastonbury (home of the world-famous music festival), supposedly the site of King Arthur’s mythical Avalon. All await you on one of our Somerset cottage holidays. The county has more than its fair share of beach resorts too. The Grand Pier at Weston-Super-Mare is superb, as is the wide beach here, while Minehead and Burnham-on-Sea offer a choice of traditional seaside pleasures. Meanwhile, for nature lovers there’s the wild landscape of Exmoor, and the Mendip and Quantock Hills, both Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Cheddar Gorge is truly stunning. Great for real Cheddar cheese too!
