Ventnor is a seaside town on the south coast of the Isle Of Wight, England. It is located not far from Bonchurch, Wroxall, Shanklin and Whitwell and is one of around 50 towns and villages in Isle Of Wight in which Go2 has cottages or holidays lets available. The closest cities are Portsmouth (population 187,056), Southampton (population 234,224), and Winchester (which has a population of 41,420 according to the 2001 Census).
Ventnor was established as a resort during the Victorian era. It is sited on underneath St Boniface Down with steep cliffs and slopes leading down to the sea. This location shelters the town from exposure to weather experienced elsewhere on the island and gives it a microclimate with more sunlight than elsewhere in Britain. This climate is ideal for the growing of tropical plants, many of which can be seen at Ventnor Botanic Garden. Make sure you pay a visit to Osborne House, built as a holiday getaway for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, which is still very much as they left it. Carisbrooke Castle also has royal connections – it was used a prison for Charles 1 in the aftermath of the Civil War.
