This picturesque Cotswolds village is renowned for its High Street, through which runs the River Windrush. Several elegant low stone bridges cross the river, leading to Bourton-on-the-Water being nicknamed, “Venice of the Cotswolds”. The river is bordered by long, wide greens, and set further back there are shops, restaurants and tearooms built from the famous Cotswolds honey-coloured stone. During the summer, a game of medieval football is played here, with the goalposts set in the river itself.
Bourton-on-the-Water offers a number of attractions for tourists. There is a model railway and a model village, the latter of which features a 1:9 replica of Bourton itself. Set in woodland, river and gardens, Birdland is inhabited by over 500 birds. The Dragonfly Maze is a traditional yew hedge maze with a rebus puzzle to solve. Factory tours can be taken around the Cotswold Perfumery, and walking tours exploring Bourton’s bloody past can also be taken in the village.
The Cotswold Motoring Museum showcases motoring history throughout the 20th century, including the popular children’s television star, Brum. The Museum won the Heart of England Tourist Board's Visitor Attraction of the Year in 2003.
Other towns and villages nearby include Stow On The Wold, Upper Oddington, and Blockley. Follow the links to find holiday cottages and lets available in this area on Go2, or view the surrounding area on the map below.
Our holiday cottages in Gloucestershire are ideally located for exploring the famous Cotswolds and Gloucestershire is also blessed with the Forest of Dean, one of our ancient woodlands. But there is much more to see in this county that is so rich in history.
The city of Gloucester, for example, is where William the Conqueror ordered the creation of the Domesday Book and the magnificent cathedral here has many connections with the Norman kings of England. With our Gloucestershire cottage holidays, you’re just a short drive away. Make sure Berkeley Castle is also on your itinerary. This 12th century castle has been owned by the Berkeley family since its foundation and is now a fine stately home, packed with art treasures, tapestries, silver, porcelain and furniture.
Then there’s elegant, genteel Cheltenham, with its grand terraces, much frequented by the lords and ladies of Georgian times and now home to some very smart shops. Or step back in time to Tewkesbury, where timbered buildings sit crowded on the banks of the rivers Avon and Severn. And don’t miss bohemian Stroud, where you’ll find a great selection of cafés and pubs.
