At the mouth of the River Char in Dorset, this village overlooks the beautiful Lyme Bay. Built on a steep hill, it slopes down to a shingle and sand beach, which offers clean, safe swimming and occasionally good surf. The beach is divided into two by the river, which is sometimes damned to form a lagoon suitable for boating or watching the ducks and swans. However Charmouth is probably best-known for fossil-hunting. The first complete Ichyosaurus fossil was discovered here in 1811, and since then the cliffs have been a remarkable source of fossils from the Jurassic period. As a result, Charmouth is at the very heart of the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site. Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre acts as a visitor centre for the area, identifying fossils found in the region and holding guided fossil walks throughout the year.
The village has maintained a friendly, traditional feel, despite being a holiday destination since the 18th and 19th centuries, when its visitors included the novelist Jane Austen. It is just one mile to the east of the Regency town of Lyme Regis, and is well-positioned for exploring the Jurassic coastline as well as the glorious Dorset countryside. Exeter, Honiton, Lyme Regis, Bridport, Weymouth and Swanage are all within travelling distance.
Attractions in the area include: The Abbotsbury Swannery; fishing trips; The Donkey Sanctuary at Sidmouth; Pecorama, a model railway exhibition and gardens; Seaton Tramway; and Beer Quarry Caves. Follow the links to find holiday cottages and lets available in this area on Go2, or view the surrounding area on the map below.
With a wide and varied selection of cottages and holiday lets in Dorset Go2 offers you the ideal way to make the most of your break in this beautiful and largely unspoilt county, where there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Dorset’s Jurassic Coast is a World Heritage Site, with dramatic coves and stunning cliffs, topped by the South West Coast Path, which offers some wonderful views. Here you’ll find characterful seaside towns like Swanage and Lyme Regis as well as the wide sweep of Weymouth Beach. If you’re looking for somewhere more lively, then Bournemouth won’t disappoint. This is one of Britain’s most popular resorts and has attractions and entertainments in abundance. Nearby Poole is quieter, but still has much to offer. Try and make the trip to Brownsea Island, a fabulous nature reserve here. Inland on your holiday in Dorset you can enjoy the rolling hills that are so characteristic of the county and explore what has become known as “Thomas Hardy Country”.
The county town of Dorchester, with its High Street lined with 17th and 18th Century houses, is little changed from Hardy’s day, while the pretty town of Shaftesbury has been used as a location in countless films set in Olde England.
