Wirksworth is the second largest town in the Derbyshire Peak District, and is also one of the area’s oldest. It is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 and developed as a centre for lead mining and stone quarrying. There are many fine old buildings to be found here, the most notable of which is St Mary’s Church, which is believed to date to around 653 AD. Now the town is a bustling local centre with a variety of small shops - including galleries, tea shops, craft shops and pubs.
In the late 19th century the remains of a woolly rhino were found in the Dream Cave in Carsington Pastures, close to Wirksworth. The Wirksworth Heritage Centre showcases the history of Wirksworth, from its Roman and lead mining histories, to the woolly rhino, and then the modern era. Other nearby attractions include the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway, the Steeple Grange Light Railway, and the National Stone Centre, which tells the story of stone and how it has influenced the development of the area.
Despite the centrality of the mining industry to the town, the landscape around is very picturesque. Wirksworth is an excellent base from which to explore the Peak District National Park, with its rugged moorlands and beautiful limestone dales. Just a few of the tourist attractions within this area include Alton Towers, Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Hardwick Hall, Lyme Hall, the Buxton Museum, the show caves at Castleton and Buxton, and the cable railway at Matlock. For many of those staying in our holiday cottages in Derbyshire, the main appeal of the county will be the unspoilt scenery of the Peak District, in the north of the county. However, there are many other attractions waiting for you in this varied region,
Derbyshire boasts a number of fine country houses, including Chatsworth House & Gardens, one of our finest stately homes with a magnificent chapel, not to mention an impressive water cascade and the towering plume of the Emperor Fountain. And Hardwick Hall in Doe Lea is one of England’s finest Elizabethan houses, with an amazing frontage of tall windows. Bolsover Castle, dating from the 12th Century, is also well worth a visit during one of our Derby cottage holidays.
The city of Derby has some excellent shopping and the Cathedral is famous for its impressive tower. If you’re in a ghoulish mood, pay a visit to Derby Gaol, a popular visitor attraction based in the old dungeons of Derby County Gaol. Afterwards, why not take a stroll in Derby Arboretum, England’s first public park, or take a look around Pickford’s House, a marvellous example of 18th Century architecture.
