About Ayr, Ayrshire And Arran

Holiday lets in Ayr, Ayrshire And Arran - Travel Guide to Ayr

The largest of the Clyde coastal towns, Ayr is situated about 35 miles southwest of Glasgow, on the mouth of the River Ayr. It looks out on the stunning panorama of the Firth, with the majestic peaks of Arran in the foreground and the Mull of Kintyre in the background. A popular holiday resort, Ayr has an appealing sea front, with an esplanade and a long sandy beach. There are plenty of parking spaces on the road running parallel with the front. From the coast the Isle of Arran is visible, and on a very clear day, the northern tip of Northern Ireland.

Scotland's National Bard, Robert Burns, was born in Alloway, on the southern outskirts of Ayr. The Robert Burns Birthplace Museum offers an exclusive encounter with Scotland’s favourite son, and incorporates the famous Burns Cottage where the poet was born, the historic landmarks where he set his greatest work, the graceful monument and gardens created in his memory and a museum housing a unique collection of his life and works.

Other attractions in the local area include: Culzean Castle and Country Park; Ayr Seafront Playpark; three public golf courses - Belleisle, Seafield and Dalmilling; Rozelle Park, The Scottish Industrial Railway Centre; Ayr Gaiety Theatre; Ayr Racecourse; and Citadel Leisure Centre.

The town is served by three main roads, the A79, A77 and A70. The railway station offers regular services to Glasgow, Stranraer, Girvan, Kilmarnock and Newcastle, and there are also many bus connections and express coaches.
