About Rutland

Holiday lets in Rutland - Travel Guide to Rutland

It may be famous as England’s smallest county, but there’s still plenty to see and do here, as you’ll soon discover when you take a break in one of our holiday cottages in Rutland.

Right in the centre of the county is Rutland Water, a huge reservoir (as large as Lake Windermere) and a major leisure facility. It offers plenty of opportunities for walking, cycling, fishing, sailing and golf and is also a great favourite with birdwatchers. If you’re feeling adventurous, you could tackle the Rutland Round, a 65 mile circular trail around the county. Our Rutland cottage holidays also give you the chance to get to know the county town of Oakham. Here you’ll find the Rutland County Museum and Oakham Castle, bedecked with more than 200 horseshoes of many different designs.

Other Rutland attractions include Lyddington Bede House, which dates back to 1400. Formerly the medieval palace of the Bishops of Lincoln, it now offers a glimpse of life in days gone by. Keen gardeners should arrange a visit to Barnsdale Gardens. These were created by Geoff Hamilton of BBC’s Gardeners’ World fame and feature a nursery of unusual plants.
