About New Romney, Kent

Holiday lets in New Romney, Kent - Travel Guide to New Romney

New Romney is a small town on the perimeter of Romney Marsh in Kent, an area of land that has been reclaimed from the sea. Once a sea port, New Romney is now over a mile from the sea, but a mooring ring can still be spotted outside its impressive Norman church. In the second half of the 13th century a sequence of storms weakened the coastal defences of Romney Marsh, and the Great Storm of 1287 almost eradicated the town. The harbour and town were filled with sand, mud, silt and debris, and the River Rother changed direction to flow out into the sea near Rye, Sussex. The debris was never completely removed, and many of the old buildings, including the church, have steps leading down into them from the modern pavement level.

The town’s historic high street offers several small, interesting shops. The former almshouses in West Street are notable historic buildings of Kent. Founded in 1610 by John Southland, a prominent local magnate, they were rebuilt in 1734.

New Romney is the headquarters of the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, a miniature mainline railway built for a millionaire racing driver in the 1920s. It still operates a full timetable, calling at the six stations from Hythe to Dungeness.

Other attractions in the area include: the Dungeness Lighthouse, with its superb panoramic views; the links golf course at Littlestone-on-Sea, once a favourite of Dennis Thatcher; Port Lympne Wild Animal Park; Dungeness Bird Observatory; Hever Castle; Dover Castle; the Royal Military Canal; and Leeds Castle. Other towns and villages nearby include Littlestone, Greatstone, St Mary's Bay, Lydd On Sea and Dymchurch.
