This traditional seaside resort on the Lincolnshire coast developed from a fishing village and now attracts thousands of visitors each year. Nestled on the mouth of the River Humber, it boasts over four miles of sandy, Blue-Flag rated beaches, a wide promenade, and a pleasure pier. It is recognised nationally as an excellent spot for kite surfing and also claims to have one of the lowest average annual rainfalls in the British Isles.
There is a wide variety of family attractions in the immediate area. Pleasure Island Family Theme Park is home to rides ranging from nursery to white-knuckle, so is suitable for all the family. The Jungle Zoo is home to a host of animals including lemurs, Caiman alligators, parrots, meerkats and capuchin monkeys. On the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway, visitors are taken on a two-mile journey along the seafront on a steam locomotive (15in gauge track). This attraction also includes a tearoom, gift shop, The Signal Box Inn, and locomotive sheds and workshops. The Discovery Centre on the Boating Lake presents two heritage exhibitions from both regional and national artists. Just a short distance out of town, Waltham Windmill is a working, 130-year-old, six-sailed windmill. It is surrounded with craft units, places to eat, a miniature railway and the Museum of Rural Life.
The town is also home to a karting centre, a nine-screen cinema, and a leisure centre offering a large family swimming pool, aqua glide and wave machine.
Cleethorpes has excellent main road and motorway links, as well as a regular railway service. It is close to both Humberside International Airport and Robin Hood Airport. A ferry service is available from Hull. Follow the links to find holiday cottages and lets available in this area on Go2, or view the surrounding area on the map below.
Whichever of our Lincolnshire cottage holidays you choose, you can be sure of a very pleasant surprise when you arrive in this peaceful, almost timeless place. It may be one of the largest of Britain’s counties, but it remains one of the least well-known. Here you’ll find wide-open spaces, far horizons and room to breathe, not to mention some excellent locally-sourced food.
Perhaps most striking are the Lincolnshire Wolds, where most of our Lincolnshire holiday cottages are located. Unlike the rest of the county, this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty boasts rolling hills, deep valleys and is ideal touring country. In complete contrast, there’s Lincolnshire’s Fun Coast, miles of sandy beaches stretching from Skegness to Mablethorpe which attracts families in search of its many seaside attractions and shows.
Not be missed is historic Lincoln, complete with its famous cathedral and medieval buildings as well as a Norman Castle where you can see one the few original copies of Magna Carta. To the south lies Stamford, a perfectly preserved Georgian Town, which featured in the TV adaptation of Middlemarch. Make sure you pay a visit to nearby Burghley House, one of our grandest Elizabethan houses.
