Situated on the south-east coast of the Isle Of Wight, in Sandown Bay, the pretty town of Shanklin is a popular location for family holidays. It is famed for its good weather and has two safe, sandy beaches - Small Hope Beach and Hope Beach - which are sheltered from the wind by the spectacular backdrop of Dunnose Point. There are many traditional seaside attractions including an amusement arcade, crazy golf, a putting green, beach huts and a children’s play area, as well as several cafes, restaurants and pubs. A cliff lift provides easy access to the cliff tops, where the views are particularly stunning. During the summer months a small road train provides a regular service to the town centre and Old Village.
The town centre has two main supermarkets, arts and crafts shops, clothing and sports shops, and some newsagents and bakeries, as well as gift shops and restaurants.
Shanklin’s Old Village is delightful, with thatched cottages, quaint shops and old-fashioned tea-rooms. It is also home to the renowned Shanklin Chine, a deep, wooded coastal ravine carved out by a stream. This beautiful and picturesque place features waterfalls and a nature trail, a Heritage Centre, a tea garden and gift shop. One of the displays showcases a small section of the pipe of the “Operation Pluto” pipeline used to supply fuel to the D-Day beaches. In the evenings the waterfalls and woodland are illuminated.
Shanklin is well-placed for exploring the rest of the Isle of Wight, and attractions within easy reach include the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary, the Amazon World Zoo, the Isle of Wight Zoo, Blackgang Chine, and the Robin Hill Adventure Park and Gardens. The town is well-served by the railway, which connects to the ferry terminal at Ryde Pier, allowing easy access to the mainland and London. Regular bus services are also provided. Follow the links to find holiday cottages and lets available in this area on Go2, or view the surrounding area on the map below.
It may be just a short ferry ride from the mainland, but the journey to the Isle of Wight seems to carry you back to a calmer, more peaceful way of life. Discover the pleasures of this delightful island for yourself from one of our holiday cottages on the Isle of Wight. Over half of the Isle of Wight is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and with more than 500 miles of footpaths, it’s easy to make the most of the unspoilt countryside here. There are excellent beaches all round the island, with Alum Bay a particular favourite because of its highly unusual multicoloured cliffs. The main coastal resorts are Sandown, Shanklin, Ventnor, Yarmouth and Ryde, all within easy reach of our holiday cottages in the Isle of Wight, and each offers everything you need for a traditional seaside holiday. Make sure you pay a visit to Osborne House, built as a holiday getaway for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, which is still very much as they left it. Carisbrooke Castle also has royal connections – it was used a prison for Charles 1 in the aftermath of the Civil War.

Travelling to or from Ireland? Don't forget the ferry! Not only does it give you
the freedom of taking your own car but it provides a superb experience of travelling
by sea and exploring the coastline. With convenient routes between Holyhead and Dublin, or Pembroke and Rosslare, we recommend
Irish Ferries for great, low-cost, transport. They are the leading Irish ferry company and provide both an excellent service, and excellent prices.
