About Amersham, Buckinghamshire

Holiday lets in Amersham, Buckinghamshire - Travel Guide to Amersham

Amersham is a market town within London’s commuter belt and set in the Chiltern Hills. Amersham is very much a town of two halves, Old Amersham and the more modern Amersham-on-the-Hill which developed as a result of the railway station in its midst.

Old Amersham in particular provides plenty of interest for visitors with its architecture and old shops, and the town provides a good base for exploring the Chilterns. Transport facilities are good with rail, bus and road access to many areas, including London which is easily accessible via the Underground (overground!) station.

'Amersham is essentially divided into two halves, the "new" town and "old" town. The new half is well catered for with shops and restaurants, is quite bustling and so not restful. It also has a London underground station, which makes this town a commuter one, and certainly accessible to central London. If this was all there was to the town, however, it would only score 2 stars. But the town is "redeemed" by Amersham Old Town, at the bottom of the hill. This truly is worth a visit - a very historic main high street lined with attractive houses, restauarants, tea shops and specialist (and very expensive and exclusive !) shops. The Old Town is indeed attractive, and little wonder often used for filming, such as for "Midsomer Murders." There is a real feeling of wealth here. Another advantage is that the Old Town nestles in the Chiltern Hills, so a good base to walk from. Visitors may also be interested in the Protestant Martyrs Memorial, about a 20 minute walk from the Old Town. Overall, Amersham is well worth a visit... but unless you like shopping, only visit the Old Town !
